Tickled Pink

Baby pink’s the colour of The Mount Nelson, a Belmond Hotel, which had its exterior painted to symbolise joy and peace at the end of WWI. Built in the early 1960s for China’s Peoples Liberation Army, Nellie, above, has an 18hp Boxer-style side-valve Cj750 influenced by BMW’s R71, introduced in 1935. Now pride of Cape Sidecar Adventures fleet, Nellie takes bespoke tours. Pinotage vineyard tours are even more enjoyable when someone else drives home. At the LVMH-owned hotel, incidentally, ELF loves Rose Cottage, a brilliantly updated two-suite house in Sydenham Terrace, 200 yards from the main 1899 building.

Tiffany’s Time

Perhaps it’s time for Tiffany blue. The Nike/Tiffany Air Force 1 1837 is black suede with a Tiffany swoosh (in 1837 Charles Lewis Tiffany, then 25, opened a boutique on New York’s Broadway). Now on Fifth Avenue, Breakfast At Tiffany’s with Petrossian caviars, lunch off Blue Box Café CLT, a chicken club sandwich.

Cancun Salsa

Salsa’s a dance, and a dip, garlic pulverised in a Mayan pestle and mortar, added chilli, coriander, and roast tomato. At Rosewood Mayakoba, south of Cancun, beach-set, open-sided Aqui Me Quedo, ‘me quiet space’, relies on post-sunset fire-pit lighting. Feel good – perhaps contribute to expenses of a local school, 500 students, five to 18, established by, and entirely funded by, the 128-room resort (Sir Philip Green took it over for his 60th).

White Lotus Special

Kazazian Cruises launches its second boutique boat this November. Named for the grandmother of movie-star hands-on owner Armen Kazazian, Arax offers five-night sailings, maximum 20 passengers, best suite 646sq ft. Luxor to Aswan or vice versa, private guide and 20 other on-board crew. WIFI to share Valley of the Kings with folks back home (Christmas and New Year are perfect, weather-wise).
